Klein Karoo Klassique

From 11 to 13 August, visitors to Oudtshoorn can treat themselves to a music extravaganza in the form of the ninth Klein Karoo Klassique, a compendium of classical music, reinterpreted by modern artists.

The Klassique covers a wide range of classical music, including guitar, violin, accordion, bass guitar, baroque, vocal, opera, harp and cello, as well as violin and piano.

The Klassique draws to a dramatic close with an ATKV concert featuring performances by the cream of South Africa’s young classical stars.

CH2 in concert

With Corneille Hutten (guitar) and Dirkie van Staden (guitar).

CH2 is a SAMA award winning duo of virtuoso guitarist. They will be performing Tárrega, Rodrigo and Bach, as well as their own flamenco-style compositions.

Vivaldi se Vier Seisoene herbesoek

With Petrus de Beer (violin), Stanislav Angelov (accordion) and Schalk Joubert (bass and recitation).

Producer: Petrus de Beer.

Vivaldi composed Four Seasons for a string orchestra in 1723. The piece was accompanied by four poems, believed to have been written by Vivaldi himself.

This modern interpretation is delivered without an orchestra and accompanied by a reading of the poems in Afrikaans.

Folk Baroque

With Camerata Tinta Barocca: Bridget Rennie-Salonen (traverso), Jesse Groenewald (baroque violin), Uwe Grosser (theorbo and baroque guitar) and Cheryl de Havilland (baroque cello).

Directed by Erik Dippenaar (spinet).

Cape Town baroque ensemble, Camerata Tinta Barocca, presents a programme of baroque music inspired by folk song and dance.

Music includes:

  • a lament by famous late 18th-century Scottish folk fiddler, Niel Gow
  • early 17th-century Italian dances
  • Barsanti’s arrangements of Scots airs
  • Geminiani’s trio sonatas based on Scottish folk songs
  • Scarlatti’s sonatas influenced by Spanish folk music

Alleenstryd: Hendrik Hofmeyr Huldigingskonsert

With Minette du Toit-Pearce (mezzo soprano), Lauren Dasappa (soprano), Jolene McCleland (mezzo soprano) and José Dias (piano).

Guest performance by Hendrik Hofmeyr.

This recital, a celebration of Hendrik Hofmeyr’s 60th birthday, gives attendees a glimpse into this musical master’s vocal compositions.

Music includes Mr Hofmeyr’s Alleenstryd (text by SV Petersen), Vroeë liefde (text by Wilhelm Knobel), In die skadu van die son (text by Lina Spies) and Of Darkness and the Heart (text by Fiona Zerbst).

With Jolene McCleland as Carmen (mezzo soprano), Lauren Dasappa as Michaëla / Frascuita (soprano), Linette van der Merwe as Mercédès (mezzo soprano), Chris Mostert as Don José / Le Remendado (tenor), Niël Rademan as Escamillo (baritone) and Raimondo van Staden as Le Dancaïre (baritone).

Carmen is one of the greatest operas of all time. For this occasion it’s condensed to a single hour, with highlights presented in chronological order.

With Jana van der Walt (harp) and Rina Schutte (cello).

Harp and cello collaborate to bring you Bach’s Arioso, as well as melodies from Gounod’s Ave Maria. This is followed by music from Estonian composer, Arvo Pärt and French composer, Claude Debussy.

From Pärt and Debussy the two musicians move to Paul Verlaine’s Clair de Lune.

The programme ends with modern classics, The Nightingale, Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen) and Vincent (Don McLean).

Beethoven Tango

With Zanta Hofmeyr (violin) and Charl du Plessis (piano).

Zanta Hofmeyr, Julliard School of Music graduate, teams up with Charl du Plessis to bring you a mix of jazz, classical, world music and tango.

They put a fresh spin on hits like:

  • An Englishman in New York – Sting
  • Fields of Gold – Sting
  • Fragile – Sting
  • Libertango – Astor Piazzolla (look for Grace Jones’ gorgeous rendition of this song on YouTube)
  • Misty (Errol Garner)

ATKV closing concert

With Megan-Geoffrey Prins (piano), Tatiana Thaele (flute), Palesa Malieloa (soprano) and Philippus Hugo (piano).

The Klassique ends with a bang, and features the cream of South Africa’s young classical crop.

Megan-Geoffrey Prins won the prestigious 2016 ATKV-Muziq award, while Tatiana Thaele was runner up.

Palesa Malieloa won the 2016 ATKV-Muziqanto, South Africa’s biggest classical competition for vocalists.

This will be a closing concert of note.
