The Knysna Oyster Festival 2017 Is Fun For Everyone, Even Non-Sporty Types

Still shuckin’ (after all of these years).

The Knysna Oyster Festival turns 32 on 7 July. For ten days, the already busy town of Knysna transforms into a bustling hub of happiness.

The festival offers various sporting events, including road and mountain biking races. Since it coincides with the Tour de France, it’s the perfect event for avid cyclists, who pour into Knysna from all over South Africa.

But the Oyster Festival is more than an attack on sweat glands. Taste buds receive a massage too.

As the name suggests, the festival is inspired by oysters. Knysna is soaked in this strange delicacy over the festival period.

For those who dislike slippery seafood, food stalls and a plethora of restaurants abound. Need to carbo-load? Pasta flows like a river through Knysna.

Sporting activities

The Oyster Festival’s main drawcard is the sporting events, which include activities that kill all muscle groups.

There are five disciplines, each of which can be entered individually.

The BIG5 Sport Challenge

Those with overactive adrenal glands can enter what’s been christened the BIG5 Sport Challenge, which includes all events, as well as the new MTB X ( a 32km mountain biking event). You’ll have to hurry though; space is limited.

The events that make up the BIG5:

  • Momentum Weekend Argus Cycle Tour
  • Knysna Dragon’s Lagoon Mile Swim
  • FeatherBed Trail Run
  • MTB X
  • Momentum Knysna Forest Half Marathon

Europcar Knysna Classic

The Europcar Knysna Classic golf event takes place on 14 July at the prestigious Pezula Championship Course. It’s a charity event. This year they’re donating proceeds to Hospice Knysna.

The event is a 4-ball alliance with a shotgun start and 120 players partaking.

As always, the Knysna Oyster Festival promises fun for all visitors, not sport buffs only.

Children

For parents who wish to partake in events, there’s the Momentum Health Kiddies area. The area offers age appropriate activities such as a jumping castle, arts and crafts and face painting. Children are supervised by qualified child minders. Leave your kids here, join in the festival fun and rest assured that your child is being looked after.

Young Oyster Festival

The Pick n Pay Young Oyster Festival presented by Humpty Dumpty Windmeul Eggs encompasses a range of events taking place over the course of the Oyster Festival.

These include:

  • Dare2Dash obstacle challenge
  • Inflatable Fun
  • BIG5 Sport Challenge Junior
  • Simola Little Phantom – Kids Adventure Run
  • Spur Rotary Knysna Children’s Cycle Tour
  • Kid’s pavement Art Competition

Knysna Wine Festival

The annual Knysna Wine Festival, a showcase of quality South African wines, takes place alongside the Oyster Festival on 10 and 11 July.

It’s the perfect opportunity for wine lovers to mingle with vintners and do some wine tasting.
